Advocacy

What is an advocate?

Usually we think of an advocate as “a person who speaks or writes in support or defense of a person, cause, etc.” (Dictionary.com)

But if we consider the original Latin source words – ad (to) + vocare (call) – another shade of meaning surfaces. What is it an advocate “calls” someone else to? Understanding? Action? Change?

Within the world of the arts, even within the church, we still need advocates. We must “call” one another, the Christian family, and the world to understanding, action, and change when it comes to the arts and the church. Although we’ve come a long way, artists and arts leaders are still hindered in the amazing work we could be doing for the glory of God through the arts.

Information is an important tool of advocacy. In these pages, we’ll be sharing what we’ve seen and what we know in order to build a body of information we can use to call others to understanding, action, and change.
